Pinoys to get working holiday visa to New Zealand

Want to visit New Zealand?

Things have just gotten easier starting this week as young Filipinos will be able to spend a year Down Under under a working holiday visa scheme.

The arrangement, which will take effect on Feb. 5, would allow Filipinos aged 18 to 30 to work, study or stay as tourists in New Zealand for 12 months.

New Zealanders can also enter the Philippines under the same scheme.

To be eligible for the working holiday visa, Filipinos must have the following:

- a Philippine passport that is valid for at least three months after your planned departure from New Zealand
- tertiary qualification granted in respect of a minimum of three years’ full-time university study
- level of proficiency in English that is assessed as at least functional
- minimum of NZ$4,200 available funds to meet living costs
- medical and comprehensive hospitalization insurance for the length of your stay
- return ticket, or enough funds to buy a return ticket

Filipinos are also not allowed to bring children with them if they are to enter New Zealand under the scheme. Filipinos who have earlier been approved a visa under a similar scheme are also not elligible for this visa.

Both countries earlier put a cap of 100 visas for each country per year.

The holiday visa scheme was signed during President Benigno Aquino's state visit to New Zealand in October 2012.

This is the first agreement of its kind entered into by the Philippines.
